Tools are a major focus in this class. Though many things can be completed by hand tools are often necessary. In creating artwork what type of tools have you used? In using these tools how did they help your work along? Explain their function and purpose. (Ex. Pottery Wheel, aviation snips, Clay rib)
For my art projects I used the pottery wheel, the needle tool, and the ribbon tool. I used the wheel for creating my sgraffito and pit fir piece, it is very hard to learn how to first use it, but after you learn it is easier. The needle tool I would use when I needed to do small little details or little things I had to carve out. For the ribbon tool I used it a lot, especially when creating the scales for my trip pod fish mug.
How has your knowledge and understanding of tools changed since the beginning of the semester? Talk about your growth of understanding.
My knowledge and understanding of tools has changed because this is my very first sculpting class and I did not know anything about these tools. Now I know at least all the basics of the tools and what their function is. My growth of knowledge about these tools helps me alot because if I did not know how to use the tools on any of my projects they wouldn't be as near as good. My fish mug is a good example of how I learned how to use the tools for all the texture.
What was your favorite material that you used this year? Why do you like working with it?
My favorite material I used was either cardboard or clay. I liked cardboard because it is fun and easy, but the only downfall is that it very tedious carving into and making a pattern. For example the bill dollar bill Micheal and I made at the beginning of the year. I like clay because the final product usually looks good, but I don't really like handling it and going from day to day with it.
Which project was your most successful? Describe the theme and or topic and the process you went through to complete the project.
The project that I found most successful was probably my tripod mug with the plate. (Fish and seashell). This was one of my first clay pieces that I felt I did really good on. To create the tripod fish mug I had to make a rectangular slab and then fold it into the tripod shape and smooth it out all in one day, and then I added on the lips, eyes, and scales later. To create the shell plate I cut out a slab shaped like a shell and then folded up the edges.
Which project was your least successful? Explain why you consider this work of art unsuccessful? If you were to create this project over, what changes would you make?
The project that I did that was the least successful is my paper mache dog. I could've done so much better if I managed my time better. All I did the first couple days was keep adding on paper, when I should've planned ahead. I rushed to create the ears, attach them, and paint everything the last day. I didn't even get to paper mache the ears or sand anything before painting. If I were to do this project again I would manage my time better so I can spend my time on the more important parts which are sanding and then painting everything well.
